Darryl at Elton John's piano

a father’s day tribute to my startup dad

Funny story –

Last weekend, I called Darryl up after I told him I was going to social distance from my phone for 48 hours. I asked him, “Can you not tell that I’ve failed miserably at staying away from my phone?” πŸ˜† He laughs and then tells me,

You didn’t fail, you just found another way to succeed. πŸ’‘

He’s right. πŸ’―

I mean, I’ve been stuck in a rut for the longest time but I didn’t need the full 48 hours phone-free to break up my routine and rediscover the things that bring me joy. It always feels good when I honor people by telling them exactly how they made a difference in my life.

Without further ado, here we go!

I met Darryl about three years ago in 1871’s Kitchen 2.0. (1871 Chicago is the tech incubator we both work out of.) He randomly walked up to me and asked me if I had a doppleganger who taught calculus in the building. 🀣 It was there that I learned that he’s the Founder and CEO of mwseqβ„’ (pronounced *music*), a powerful online community that’s setting out to Harmonize the Worldβ„’

The pic above was taken at the Legal Operators Virtual Happy Hour, where he edu-tained (get it? educate + entertain) the crowd with stories on technology, innovation, his love of music, and the driving force behind his company – all while playing a curated list of songs on Elton John’s piano at 2112 Chicago, the incubator for creatives downtown.

It’s so funny how the Universe lines up the right people at the right place, at the right time for you. As Abraham says,

There are no coincidences, only cooperative incidences. ⚑

These past couple years have been glorious and I’m so grateful I have Darryl in my corner, always encouraging me towards the person I’m meant to become. I love how he just *gets me* as a person and as a professional. Every time we see each other in passing at the office, we’re always like:

I also love how he’s constantly looking out for me, from gently telling me to go rest to *very very* patiently highlighting the high road despite how stubborn, crazy, and judgey I can get. 😬As a true visionary, he’s always ~6 months ahead of me and it’s always perfect because when the student is ready, the lesson appears. 🌱

Darryl, when you see this I just want you to know:

Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Your undying patience with me doesn’t go unnoticed.  πŸ’•

Thank you for always being there (often at a moment’s notice) to listen to my ideas no matter how farfetched they may seem. I know how busy you are but you always make time for me. Thank you for providing me a safe haven to dream out loud, never knocking my ideas but always asking questions to inspire me towards the grander vision. 🌊

Thank you for continuing to show me what true strength, grace, and resilience looks and feels like. ✨

Don’t just take my word for it –

He recently won an award recently from Chicago Semester for providing an excellent working environment for a cohort of amazing college interns. My assistants were thoroughly impressed. πŸ˜»πŸ¦„

I can’t wait to help you tell your story at scale while 6X-ing the Fiercely Conscious brand this year. ⚑

To my incredibly cool and amazing #startupdad, Happy Father’s Day. πŸ’—

  1. Wow.

    Nancy, I’m misty …

I’ll craft a curated response later when I’m less in my feelings … πŸ™‚ ❀

To loosely quote Bette Midler, “You didn’t know you were my SHE-RO … ”

    Mad Respect and Undying Loyalty,

    Your Startup Dad
